From its humble beginnings as a meandering creek through a lush salt marsh dotted with gristmills; to its pivotal role in a major battle of the American Revolution; to becoming the busiest cargo transportation hub in the country; the Gowanus Canal — & its surrounding neighborhood — has been experiencing a renaissance over the past several years. A thriving community of long-time residents (as well as newcomers who are drawn to the area’s gritty, industrial appeal) reside amongst the more than 300 artists who rent studio & gallery space in re-purposed factory buildings.

Among the many destinations in the neighborhood, one can enjoy home-made ice cream on a roof-top deck, freshly-baked pies, craft breweries, indoor rock-climbing, shuffleboard, & even an offbeat museum. Gowanus, Brooklyn has something of interest for everyone! On our journey, we will have the opportunity to meet some of these independent small business owners whose establishments are revitalizing the neighborhood, while learning about the fascinating history along the banks of the Gowanus Canal.

Who will enjoy this event?: Adults over age 21; Foodies & Beer lovers; People who want to learn more about: Brooklyn History, Bridges & Waterways, the American Revolution, Local Artists, & a little Baseball History.
